Hemorrhoids, commonly known as piles, is a disease that occurs when the veins in the anus become dilated (inflamed). Over the past ten years, there has been a marked increase in the incidence of hemorrhoids among youth, accounting for 40 to 50 percent of all patients, up from around 20 percent earlier. This condition usually causes discomfort, pain, itching, disturbance in bowel movements and bleeding. Here we will discuss about all the causes and symptoms of piles.

The 5 causes of piles are as follows:

1. Constipation

Constipation is the primary cause of these hemorrhagic masses. It refers to straining during defecation or frequent passing that occurs less than 3 times a week. Constipation in young people is caused by lifestyle changes, especially the consumption of foods high in calories, fried foods that cause dehydration, which leads to hard stools.

2. Lack of Fiber

Due to the lack of fiber in the food intake, the stool becomes more hard.

3. Stress

Stress and depression also cause dehydration and hardening of the stool.

4. Sleep Problems

Insomnia and social holding or postponing the urge to defecate lead to hard stools.

5. Incorrect posture or prolonged sitting

Incorrect posture during the act of defecation can increase the tension during the act of defecation. Prolonged straining/sitting with the use of gadgets during the act of defecation is another primitive cause of hemorrhagic formation.

symptoms of piles

Many patients with piles are asymptomatic, due to which they seek medical attention in the later stages of the disease. The initial stages are usually neglected, so medical management will not be sufficient for them. There are three types of hemorrhoids which include:

Internal: Patients with internal hemorrhoids present with painless bleeding or excessive mucus secretion during bowel movements. You may also experience pain and burning.

external: Patients with external hemorrhoids present with a throbbing painful mass in the anal passage, sometimes with infection. Most of the patients experience symptoms like pain, discomfort, bleeding, swelling around the anus along with the symptoms of anal fissure.

Diagnosis and treatment options for hemorrhoids:

diagnosis

Proper evaluation is essential before starting the treatment for piles so that recurrence can be prevented and complete treatment can be given to the bleeding patients.

Physical examinations to diagnose the disease include a digital rectal examination, an anoscopy in the clinic, and a sigmoidoscopy prior to surgery.

treatment

To treat the condition, medical management is recommended for all; However, patients with advanced stage require irreversible procedures. The latest method of laser ablation of hemorrhoidal mass provides significant anchorage of the hemorrhoidal mass and complete constriction of the hemorrhagic vessels thus relieving most of the symptoms.
