Diabetes is a very common health condition and it is a problem that requires a person to pay constant attention to their diet. Keeping your blood sugar level under control is absolutely essential if you are suffering from diabetes as fluctuating sugar levels pose a lot of health risks. So, we have come here with some pulses and legumes which are great for diabetics.
A study published on ResearchGate shows that a diet containing lentils significantly reduced total cholesterol and fasting blood sugar. Consuming cooked lentils as LGI or low glycemic index foods that do not affect your blood sugar levels as much as breakfast food decreased fasting blood sugar and glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes improved.

All pulses and legumes are extremely healthy. They are high in protein and not only good for diabetics but also prevent cardiovascular problems. “The diet of a diabetic patient should be naturally high in nutrients, low in calories and include complex carbohydrates. And when one talks about a diet for diabetes, one cannot but miss legumes or lentils, Says Avni Kaul, a renowned nutritionist. But here are 3 pulses that are perfect for controlling blood sugar levels in diabetics.
Here are 3 pulses and beans that are good for diabetics:
1. Chana Dal
Chana dal has a very low glycemic index of 8 which basically makes it a superfood for diabetics. It is a rich source of protein and fiber which makes it an overall healthy food item. The high fiber content also regulates your blood sugar levels and keeps them under control. “It is also good for the heart as it has high potassium and low sodium content which keeps your blood pressure under control and helps in the formation of red blood cells,” says Kaul.

2. Green gram (moong dal)
Any food with a glycemic index less than 50 is considered good for diabetics and green gram has a glycemic index of 38. Green gram is a rich source of antioxidants which makes it great for fighting chronic diseases like diabetes. In fact, a 2015 study suggests that green gram bran biscuits are also great for diabetics as they are rich in dietary fiber and, therefore, help control blood sugar levels.

3. Legumes
Chickpeas, kidney beans and black beans are especially good for diabetic patients as they all have a GI of less than 40 and hence, these foods do not alter glucose levels wildly. Chickpeas in particular are a rich source of dietary fiber which is great for diabetics. “High in protein and fiber, chickpeas are packed with vitamins and minerals. Even if you are diabetic, just keep on liking chickpeas as before,” says Kaul.
It is advised that diabetic patients should include these pulses and legumes in their daily diet to keep their blood sugar levels in check!
